Srinagar, Apr 19 (KNO): A 30-year-old Mohammad Suhail Khan, a deaf and mute artist from Wanpora area of Pulwama district, has captured attention for his extraordinary talent in a diverse range of art forms. Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts at the University of Kashmir, Suhail’s journey is one of overcoming adversity through artistic expression. Moomin, Suhail’s close friend and classmate, who also lives with him, spoke to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) and shared insights into Suhail’s life and work. “According to his family, Suhail wasn’t very interested in studies as a child. He was always drawn to drawing and art,” Moomin said. Having lived together for the past four years, Moomin said communication was initially difficult, but with time, they learned to understand each other well. “There’s always logic and meaning behind Suhail’s work. He’s deeply creative,” he added. Over time, Suhail has mastered an impressive array of artistic disciplines, including sculpture, printmaking, clay modelling, cake decorating, henna design, ring making, wall painting, photography and videography. Despite the challenges of being non-verbal, Suhail’s dedication has led to remarkable achievements. In January 2025, Suhail represented India at the International Snow Sculpture Competition in Breckenridge, Colorado, where his team earned second place among 12 global teams. “Initially, he didn’t get much support from his family. But as he began receiving recognition on a larger scale, that changed,” Moomin said. “Now, he is receiving encouragement from everyone, including his family.” Suhail has won multiple awards at state, national and international levels and continues to earn acclaim for his talents. He has also worked with various hotels, particularly noted for his decoration work. Suhail’s work stands as a powerful medium of expression, transcending the barriers of speech and hearing. His story is a reminder of the transformative power of art and the importance of supporting individuals with disabilities who contribute profoundly to the cultural fabric of society—(KNO)
